A taste of harmony
A number of community groups and schools from across the Grampians Pyrenees planned exciting cultural activities to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week from March 15-21, thanks to one-off funding from the region’s Skilled Migration Program.

Amongst those to receive a $500 grant were Ararat Neighbourhood House and Stawell based social networking group LinkUp. Both used the funds to conduct Taste of Harmony events, where food from other cultures were prepared and shared with members of the community.

Marian College in Ararat used its grant to celebrate cultural diversity within the school through cultural quizzes, cooking, sport and flag making, culminating in a Taste of Harmony lunch.

Building on its experience from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, Ararat North Primary School students conducted a Taste of Harmony lunch, drawing from the expertise of families at the school with Koori, Turkish and Pakistani backgrounds.

In line with its Japanese studies, Beaufort Secondary College used the grant to fund a workshop by the dynamic Wadaiko Rindo Japanese Drummers, unleashing students on this energetic traditional drumming style. Ararat Community College also hosted a workshop for year nine students by Australia’s leading intercultural arts organisation Cultural Infusion.

Great Western Primary School appointed a specialist art teacher to help students create a visual representation of people from around the world, which was displayed in the school grounds as a permanent fixture, whilst St Patrick’s Primary School also explored different cultures through visual and performing arts.

Regional Skilled Migration Coordinator, Celia Tucker, whose program is auspiced by the Grampians Pyrenees Regional Development Board, said she was thrilled with the community’s response to get involved with Cultural Diversity Week.

“Successful grant applicants displayed a real commitment to explore the region’s cultural, linguistic and religious diversity through a variety of exciting activities,” Ms Tucker said.

“In particular it’s great to see that some funding will be used to bring cultural workshops to the region, which wouldn’t normally be accessible.

“I hope that all of our successful recipients enjoy activities planned for Cultural Diversity Week and that the broader community gets involved wherever possible.”
